"Won't Back Down" Screening at DNC Convention Promotes Support for Kid-Focused Ed Reform

Ben Austin, Parent Revolution's Executive Director, attended Monday's special pre-release screening of "Won't Back Down" (view trailer here) and spoke briefly following the screening to a room filled with excited audience members.  Buoyed with the unanimous support of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Austin argue that progressives are increasingly supportive Parent Trigger laws.

Major Democrat supporters include: Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.

On the post-screening panel, Austin explained that Parent Trigger laws provide real power for parents and real options for kids in our nation's worst schools schools, because they grant legal rights for parents to unionize and collectively bargain, just like teachers' unions.

In a prior interview, the film's director Daniel Barnz - a self-described 'liberal Democrat' - made the following comments in an interview posted on Huffington Post:

"I think that people are a bit tired of the finger-pointing and scapegoating within this world. I think they just want to see a way in which our schools can improve. That's the spirit of the film."

"I think this film is an absolute celebration of teaching. It is pro-teacher and celebrates all the incredible things that teachers do."

"...[T]he film is not anti-anything. It's pro-children."
