Vote for Calif. Prop. 30 on November 6

“Parent Revolution is announcing its support for Proposition 30 which is on the California ballot on November 6.

“Parent Revolution stands for the simple notion that we must make every single decision in public education based on the best interests of children, not adults. This vision is only possible if parents are empowered to hold the system accountable to the interests of children. Passing Prop. 30 to prevent further draconian cuts to our schools is a vital component of a kids-first agenda right now in California.

“We commend Governor Brown for bringing this to voters so cuts can be avoided.

“There are some in the education reform community opposing Prop. 30 who argue any public education revenue increase should be coupled with reform. Given the times and economic challenges currently confronting our state, we must respectfully disagree.

“We agree more money alone can never fix what ails our broken system of public education, which continues to fail hundreds of thousands of California children every day. But while adequate school funding is certainly not sufficient to ensure every child receives a quality public education, it is absolutely necessary.

“The parents we work with every day are fighting for systemic change at their schools. They are dismayed to see art and music programs taken away from their children. They know children who have fallen behind need more learning time, not less, and are horrified that their school year could be cut by two additional weeks.

“As a father in the Los Angeles Unified School District, I want the exact same thing for my daughter. In addition to exceptional teachers in every classroom, and adults who are accountable for student performance, she needs an enriching education that will teach her to think creatively about the world. She needs a school year long enough to allow her to learn. If Prop. 30 fails to pass, I – and millions of other parents – will be forced to face disastrous cuts in these vital areas for our children.

“The stakes could not be higher. These are not normal times. We cannot have an excellent public education for every child if there is no funding for our children to have updated textbooks, access to technology, or a long enough school year. We know the deepest impact of education cuts will fall on schools in communities where the opportunity gap is real, and children are part of a system of continuing failure.

“Parents cannot allow this to happen. That is why Parent Revolution is urging California voters to vote “Yes” for Prop. 30 on November 6.”
