Our mission
Parent Revolution aims to transform public education rooted in what's good for kids -- not grown-ups -- by empowering parents to transform their own children’s low-performing schools through community organizing.
Two years of creating change
Over the past two years, Parent Revolution has organized thousands of parents around transforming their children’s failing schools.
In January 2009, on the day of President Obama’s inauguration, we launched the Parent Revolution, based on the simple premise that education should be about children, not adults. Thousands of parents, from every corner of Los Angeles, joined the Revolution, demanding change at their children’s failing schools.
In August 2009, we organized a massive, successful grassroots campaign to pass the LAUSD Public School Choice Resolution, which forces the district – for the first time ever - to actually compete against charter operators, groups of teachers, and other non-profits to run their own schools.
And in January 2010, we organized a second massive, successful grassroots campaign to pass a law called the Parent Trigger through the California State Legislature. Passed by just one vote, the Parent Trigger empowers parents at any failing school in California to transform their school simply through community organizing.
The Obama administration has laid out four ways that a low-performing school can be transformed into a great one, and those are the options available under the Parent Trigger. Now, if 51% of the parents at a school sign a petition demanding change, the school district is required to transform the school using the school turnaround strategy selected by the parents.
