Media Backgrounder Update on Adelanto School District/Desert Trails Parent Trigger Petition Implementation

Today – Friday, August 17 – is the last day for the Adelanto School District Board to accept the rescinded Parent Trigger petitions pursuant to Superior Court Judge Steve Malone’s order of July 18.

As part of the historic decision verifying the Desert Trails Parent Union’s Parent Trigger petition to transform the Desert Trails Elementary School, the Adelanto School District was given 30 days in which to accept the rescinded petitions. The Desert Trails Parent Union (DTPU) is expecting its petition to be accepted at an Adelanto School Board meeting today [Friday, August 17) as Judge Malone ordered.

The District could also opt to file an expensive and uphill appeal of Judge Malone’s ruling, though this will cost hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars, money that should be spent on children and teachers rather than high-priced lawyers. In the unlikely event the school board ignores Judge Malone’s order, they will face serious legal sanctions.

Also pursuant to Judge Malone’s order, the parents are already moving forward with the necessary steps for the transformation of the school as outlined in the Parent Trigger regulations.

After widely distributing a request for ‘Letters of Intent’ (LOI), the DTPU last week selected three respondents to submit a formal proposal within 90 days (Sept. 20, 2012). Following the receipt of those proposals, the DTPU will make a decision on which organization to partner with. The school transformation process will be completed by September 2013.

The Adelanto School District Board is scheduled to meet at 4:35pm today (Friday, August 17) in closed session. The public session will begin at 7:00pm.
